The 2% Shift Small Changes for Financial and Personal Growth in 2025

January 06, 2025

Almost 2% of 2025 is over.

One week into January means that there are only 51 weeks left.

Time flies. Life is short. We humans are limited.

Embracing limits doesn't mean living life passively. It should cause us to put more energy into the actions that matter the most.

Let's get active with 2% more of our life.

What if you contributed 2% more to retirement planning or gave 2% more to charity?

What if you spent one more week of your year on vacation with people you love?

What if you spent 175 hours this year lifting weights, running, or walking? That's about an hour every other day.

Maybe you need to do less. Take 30 minutes every day and read a book, journal, nap, call a friend, or play a game. Try doing it without a screen.

Some of you need to quit being afraid of risk. What if you were consistently 2% riskier in your investment decisions?

Some of you need to quit being afraid of caution. What if you were consistently 2% safer in your investment decisions?

Two percent may not be the right number for any of these things for you. My purpose is to cultivate curiosity that will result in concrete decisions.

Few meaningful things ever happen in life by being vague.

Review these decisions with someone else—a mentor, financial advisor, spouse, or friend. Then tell them your commitments.

Make failure not not an option. Fearing failure can be more of a prison than failing. Alexey Guzey says, “the richest people lose the most money, the most connected people get rejected the most, the most successful people fail the most.”1 Don’t ignore that, even if it’s overstated.

Remember, as long as you're a living and breathing adult, your time and money will be being spent in 2025 no matter what.
